What is it? Project CRISS for Students: It's a Brain Thing ~ Learning How to Learn! is a semester-long learning strategies class for students. The semester class guides students through a series of CRISS Strategic Learning Plans, some based on the content in Tough Terminators by Sneed B. Collard III (a trade book about predators) and some based on a DVD from the Critterman's World series (informational videos about animals in northwest Montana). Other learning plans are based on the CRISS principles of learning. As students progress through the book, they are exposed to more and more of the CRISS strategies. In the beginning, the learning plans are very teacher directed. As the semester progresses, students start making their own strategy selections, and finally, near the end of the class, students complete the learning plans by themselves. Throughout all lessons, the students are required to apply the strategies to their other content classes. In fact, we recommend that the CRISS for Students teachers allow their students to use class time for practicing strategy use and developing learning plans in their other subject area classes.
Who is it for? The target audience for this program is students in grades 6-9. However, it could be used with upper elementary students or with high school students beyond grade nine who need to improve their comprehension skills. The program must be used in schools where the teachers are already CRISS trained. This class will provide CRISS philosophy and strategy instruction, as well as guide students in using CRISS in their other classes.
What does it cost? The materials for CRISS for Students will be sold as a classroom set for $550.00 (plus shipping and handling). The set includes:
