Support Materials: CRISS for Administrators

What is it? CRISS for Administrators provides guidance to an administrator and his or her CRISS planning team on how to obtain effective implementation of Project CRISS at the school or district level. We created this administrators guide in two versions, elementary and secondary. Both versions work in conjunction with the CRISS training manual, a CD-ROM, and a DVD containing the Video Journal of Education's video set "Reading in the Content Areas with Research-based CRISS Strategies." The CD-ROM and DVD are inserted inside the cover of each CRISS for Administrators booklet. [Note: The videos come in elementary and secondary editions that correspond with the two versions of the CRISS for Administrators booklets.]

How does CRISS for Administrators work? The booklet is organized around five questions relating to successful CRISS implementation.

  • How do schools or districts launch Project CRISS effectively?
  • What are the keys to successful implementation?
  • How do schools or districts sustain Project CRISS implementation?
  • How can schools or districts enlist the support of parents and the community?
  • How can administrative walk-throughs support and guide Project CRISS implementation?

The guide devotes one chapter to each of the questions. Throughout each chapter the implementation team and its individual members are guided in the creation of a three-year-plan—the Project CRISS Implementation Map. In addition, the booklet contains forms for assessing CRISS usage by teachers and students and for evaluating the implementation on a classroom or school-wide basis.

What is the goal of CRISS for Administrators? It is our hope that, through the use of the CRISS for Administrators booklet, administrators will learn how to effectively plan, implement, and maintain Project CRISS in their schools and/or districts. We have taken ideas from researchers and from CRISS administrators across the country and organized them in a way that will be easy to use for implementation teams. Through journaling, team meetings, and reflections, CRISS will be seamlessly applied and utilized by teachers and their students with one ultimate goal—student ownership of the CRISS principles and strategies.

What does the program cost? The cost of the CRISS for Administrators booklet with the CD-ROM "Reading in the Content Areas" and the "Leadership" DVD is $55.00. Click here for an order form. CRISS provides an optional two-day training for administrators which includes a site visit for modeling the walk-through process. Costs for this training include a trainer consultant fee of $1,000 per day and travel expenses. Contact the CRISS office for more details.
